Product Description
Jamieson Brothers® Bamburger Long Onion - 20 pack
Spring Planting
Bulb size 10-21cm
Bamberger Onions, a revered culinary delight, are distinctively large, flavorful onions with a rich heritage deeply rooted in the Bamberg region of Germany. These onions are notable for their impressive size, often showcasing a robust and layered structure. The outer layers are a vibrant, golden brown, encasing tender and succulent inner layers.
SOIL PREPARATION: Shallots require a well drained, fertile soil that will need to be deeply dug over before planting.
For the best results dig in organic compost or manure a few weeks before planting.
This will help add nutrients, improve soil structure and hold moisture.
PLANTING: Plant the bulbs from January to April.
Prepare the rows 22cm apart and then space the bulbs 10cm apart and 2-5cm deep along each row.
Press the bulbs gently into the ground, nose facing upwards, cover them with a thin layer of soil and firm the soil around the bulb.
CARE:Keep the area weed free by regular hoeing and ensure the bulbs remain covered with soil.
Keep them well watered during the growing season.
Stop watering when the bulbs have swollen and expose the top of the bulbs to the light by gently pulling back the earth around them.
Break off any flower stems that may appear.
HARVESTING: When the leaves turn yellow and the foliage collapses leave in the ground for 2 more weeks before lifting.
Lift gently from underneath using a fork so as not to damage any bulbs.
Remove any dirt, roots and brittle stems, spread them out in a crate or on a sack to enable them to dry for 7-10 days.
When dry they can be placed in nets or tied together and hung in a cool but frost free place within a dry and well ventilated environment.
These may then be stored for up to 8 months.
Grown from cultivated stock.

FAQs
Please read our FAQs page to find out more.
What's the best compost for my flower bulbs?
We would recommend a compost that contains nutrients that last up to 6 months to promote strong, healthy roots, and often includes a wetting agent to improve water retention and drainage for a vibrant spring display.
Here's the perfect one: Click Here
How can I prevent my bulbs from rotting and ensure they bloom again?
Bulbs rot in wet soil! You must have light, well-drained soil. Work compost or organic matter 8-12 inches deep into the planting bed to ensure rapid drainage and aeration.
Plant most bulbs in full sun or part sun for the long-term energy recharge.
What is the most critical step for getting flowers next year after the current blooms fade?
Do not cut the foliage (leaves) after the flower dies. The green leaves need approximately 8 weeks to yellow and brown naturally. This post-bloom period is when the bulb recharges its energy (carbohydrates) for next year’s flower. Cutting them early causes bloom failure!
How deep should I plant my bulbs?
Plant bulbs roughly three times as deep as the bulb’s height (e.g., a 2-inch tall bulb should be planted 6 inches deep). This depth provides crucial thermal protection.
You'll find the exact specifications on the bulbs page/
Do you ship to Northern Ireland or the EU?
At present, we’re unable to ship to Northern Ireland due to post-Brexit regulations. The additional paperwork and costs involved would make it too expensive for customers.
We hope this situation will change in the near future.
