Autumn Care

To store bulbs over winter:

  • Dig Up: Carefully dig up the bulbs after the foliage has died back.
  • Clean: Remove excess soil and let them dry for a few days.
  • Store: Place bulbs in a paper bag or mesh sack in a cool, dry place with good air circulation.

Forcing bulbs indoors allows you to enjoy flowers during winter. Here’s how:
- Choose Bulbs: Select bulbs like hyacinths, tulips, or paperwhites.
- Chill Bulbs: Place bulbs in a cool, dark place (35-45°F) for 12-16 weeks.
- Potting: Plant chilled bulbs in pots with well-draining soil.
- Water and Light: Water regularly and place in a sunny location.

Proper fertilisation promotes healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Follow these steps:
- Before Planting: Mix a balanced fertiliser into the soil.
- After Planting: Apply a bulb-specific fertiliser on top of the soil.
- Post-Bloom: Fertilise again after blooming to strengthen the bulbs for the next season.

Protecting bulbs from pests is essential for healthy growth. Here are some strategies:

  • Physical Barriers: Use wire mesh or bulb cages to protect from digging animals.
  • Natural Repellents: Plant bulbs like daffodils and alliums, which deter rodents.
  • Proper Planting Depth: Plant bulbs at the recommended depth to reduce accessibility to pests.
